A Creative Harmony: Combining Animation and Acappella

Welcome to a creative journey that traverses the realms of imagination, music, and collaboration. I invite you to join me in reliving a transformative journey that began with a university project and culminated in a harmonious partnership with the captivating acappella group, Scripture Says.

For those of you who don't know, I studied animation at University from 2015 - 2018. It seems like it was just yesterday but it's really been a while! In my 2nd year of university, our main assignment was to create a 2 minute animation of a story adaptation. This mean we had to take a known story and edit it, add some twist and turns, make it modern or even change the ending... the possibilities were endless.

As a university artist driven by a passion for storytelling through visuals, scripture and animation, I chose to adapt the story of the prodigal son found in the Bible in Luke 15:11-32. I tried to modernise it to make it more relatable, and made the character a daughter instead of a son. But I knew that I had to do more. This couldn't be 2 minutes of silent animation, I wanted it to be a music video. So, I wrote a song with the help of my sister Laura (the soprano in Scripture Says) and asked my dear friends to record the song for me.

I was so happy with the outcome, I don't get bored of listening to this! This animation means so much to me, it reminds me that being surrounded by the Fathers love is far better than anything else.

But once again, this was not the end of my work with Scripture Says

In 2018, Scripture Says launched their new album entitled He Lives. They wanted an illustration of Jesus and I tried a few different things, but none of them stood out. Then the suggestion was made of having the illustration made up of vibrant colours. I then created this illustration from colourful geometric shapes and it worked perfectly.

Of course, none of us know what Jesus looks like, but we do know that He made a big impact. No portrait of Jesus could ever do Him justice, but I believe this album art has impact.

But this was not the end of the collaborations...

In 2019, I collaborated with Scripture Says once again to animate on top of one of their music videos, Heaven, a song that featured on their second album. This is such a happy song and the challenge was to ensure that the animation hits the beats. I thoroughly enjoyed animating this video.

I used a Wacom tablet to draw the text and little symbols, I wanted to draw the text rather than type it as it would have looked very static. If you look at my animations from 2017 - 2019 you'll see that animated music videos seems to be what I enjoy the most!

Working with Scripture Says was a dream, definitely take a look at their music.
